Your menstrual cycle isn't just "your period and everything else." It's a monthly sequence of four phases, each driven by a shifting balance of hormones — and each with its own effect on your energy, your body, and your fertility. Understanding them is the foundation of body literacy, and it's what makes the signs you chart actually make sense.
A cycle is counted from day one, the first day of your full period, to the day before your next period begins. The classic textbook cycle is 28 days, but anywhere in a broad range is normal — and, as you'll see, the variation almost always comes from one particular phase.
Phase 1 — Menstruation
Your cycle opens with your period. Because the previous cycle didn't end in pregnancy, hormone levels have dropped, and the uterine lining (the endometrium) that had built up is shed. This is your bleed, and it typically lasts three to seven days.
With estrogen and progesterone at their lowest, many people feel lower energy in the first day or two. It's a natural time to rest a little more. Technically, menstruation is the beginning of the next phase, too — the follicular phase — which is already quietly getting underway.
Phase 2 — The follicular phase
The follicular phase runs from day one until ovulation. Its name comes from the follicles — small fluid-filled sacs in your ovaries, each holding an immature egg. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) prompts a batch of them to develop, and usually one becomes dominant.
As those follicles grow, they release estrogen. Rising estrogen does two important things: it rebuilds the uterine lining after your period, and it changes your cervical mucus — from dry or sticky toward wetter, creamier, and eventually clear and stretchy. Many people notice rising energy, better mood, and a clearer head as estrogen climbs.
This is the phase that varies. The follicular phase can be shorter or longer from cycle to cycle — affected by stress, illness, travel, and more. That's why ovulation doesn't reliably land on "day 14," and why calendar predictions so often miss. Charting your real-time signs is what pinpoints it.
Phase 3 — Ovulation
When estrogen peaks, it triggers a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) — the signal that releases the mature egg from its follicle. This is ovulation, and it's the main event of the cycle. Ovulation predictor kits work by detecting that LH surge, which typically precedes egg release by around a day.
Ovulation itself is brief: the egg survives for only about 12–24 hours. But your fertile window is wider — roughly six days — because sperm can live for up to five days in fertile-quality cervical mucus, ready and waiting. Around ovulation you may notice the most abundant, slippery, egg-white mucus of your cycle, a rise in libido, and sometimes a one-sided twinge of ovulation pain. Just after it, your basal body temperature rises and stays up — the confirmation that ovulation has passed.
Phase 4 — The luteal phase
After releasing the egg, the emptied follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone of the second half of your cycle: it maintains the uterine lining in case of pregnancy, raises your resting temperature, and dries up your cervical mucus.
If the egg isn't fertilized, the corpus luteum breaks down after roughly 11–16 days, progesterone falls, and the lining is released — your next period begins, and a new cycle starts. That falling progesterone is also behind the familiar premenstrual shifts in mood, appetite, and energy that many people feel in the days before bleeding.
The steady phase. Unlike the follicular phase, the luteal phase tends to stay a fairly consistent length for each person. This is one reason confirming ovulation is so useful: once you know when you ovulated, the rest of your cycle is relatively predictable.
Why knowing your phases matters
When you can name where you are in your cycle, everything else falls into place. Fertile mucus makes sense as an estrogen signal. A temperature rise makes sense as progesterone. Premenstrual feelings make sense as progesterone withdrawal. Instead of a mystery, your cycle becomes a pattern you can read — and, if you choose, work with rather than against.
